How to Choose a Digital Product Studio: 7 Questions to Ask
Most bad studio engagements go wrong for predictable reasons: unclear scope, the wrong person doing the work, or a mismatch in size. These seven questions surface those problems before you sign.
1. Who will actually build my project?
At larger agencies the person who sells you the project is often not the one building it. Ask directly who writes the code and designs the screens, and whether you will be able to talk to them.
2. Can I see live projects, not just screenshots?
A portfolio of mockups proves little. Live sites and apps you can click through show how the work behaves. Ask which parts the studio personally built and what the client's goal was.
3. How do you scope and price the work?
A good answer is an itemized scope tied to deliverables: what is included, what is not, and what happens if the scope changes. Vague estimates such as a comprehensive digital presence make it hard to compare studios or hold anyone accountable.
4. What happens after launch?
Ask who fixes bugs, who hosts the product, and what a small change costs. You want a clear answer before you start, not after.
5. Do I own the code and the accounts?
You should own your domain, your hosting account, your code and your data. If a studio holds any of these hostage, treat it as a red flag.
6. How will we communicate?
Ask how often you will get updates, how quickly questions are answered, and whether you will see work in progress rather than just a final reveal.
7. Is this the right size studio for my project?
Large agencies can be a poor fit for small budgets. A one- or two-person studio can be a poor fit if you need five developers working in parallel. Be honest about your scale and ask the studio if you are a good fit. A good one will tell you if you are not.
What are the red flags?
- —No live examples, or examples they cannot explain.
- —A fixed price quoted before any discussion of your goals.
- —Pressure to sign quickly.
- —Unwillingness to name who does the work.
- —No clear answer on ownership of code, domain and hosting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a digital product studio is legitimate?
Look for live projects you can open, a clear scope and contract, named people doing the work, and straightforward answers about pricing, ownership and support.
Should I choose the cheapest studio?
Not automatically. Very low quotes often mean templates, offshore subcontracting or missing scope. Compare what is included, not just the total.
How many studios should I talk to?
Two or three is enough. Give each the same short brief and compare how they respond, what they ask you, and how clearly they scope the work.
Is a small studio riskier than a big agency?
The risk is different. A small studio has capacity limits but direct accountability. A large agency has depth but more layers between you and the work.
How CloudG8 Design fits
Ask us the same seven questions.
CloudG8 Design is a one-person, founder-led studio, so question one is easy to answer: you work with the person doing the work. Live projects like Audair, Hear My Home and Cameo Aesthetics are on the homepage. If we are not the right size for your project, we will say so.
